Winter CONCERT

Shir Joy Chorus will present its Winter Concert, "Building Bridges Through Song," on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 7:30 pm at Congregation B'nai Shalom, 117 E. Main St., Westborough, MA.  This concert of Jewish music is aimed at uniting and healing the community through song.  Selections will include rounds and part songs from ancient times to the present, and will include soloists on cello and banjo, as well as piano accompaniment by Lisa Marcus-Jones.  Come hear a bluegrass song written by Nefesh Mountain in response to the Pittsburgh synagogue tragedy, as well as a new composition by our director based on a poem by Wendell Berry. Also included will be songs based on Israeli folk dances, as well as a Yiddish piece for which the music was likely written by Mozart. Shir Joy's concerts always include a sing-along!  NOTE: Snow Date is Sun., Feb. 10th at 7:00 pm.

OPENING DAY

The chorus had an exciting opening day in October.  We welcomed each other back for the new season and greeted new, returning, and potential members.  The chorus now has six new members! As always, our potluck food spread was generous and delicious. Every chorus member received a complete binder plus access to practice recordings of songs.  Thank you to the music library committee, recording committee, and board of directors for getting it all together for us!

TOUR DE JOY

On Sunday, December 2nd, Shir Joy hit the road in Westborough on our first mini-tour.  First stop was the Westborough Senior Center where we were warmly welcomed and invited back for next year.  Next, we went to Whittier Rehab where we brought our music to those who could not get out. The setting was a cozy living room and families joined residents for our concert.  Since this was the first night of Chanukah, we brought an electric menorah to both concerts and the chorus and audience “lit” the menorah together at each concert. After this, the chorus ate dinner together at Panera Bread. Believe it or not, we then went on to have a rehearsal.  The chorus was in good spirits, as witnessed by these fun photos:

NORTHBOROUGH COMMUNITY MEALS

In January, the chorus took to the road again, this time to Trinity Church in Northborough.  Every Wednesday, the church serves a free meal to anyone looking for fellowship and good food.  Shir Joy was pleased to perform for the diners who enjoyed the musical atmosphere and joined in on the sing-along.  The singers then joined the diners for good conversation and a meal. Here we are warming up for the performance:

About Shir Joy

Shir Joy Chorus is an adult community chorus, dedicated to learning, sharing, and performing Jewish music from the rich and varied Judaic cultures of Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. Although many temples & synagogues have choruses which sing on the holidays, we are the only year-round transdenominational Jewish chorus in Central Massachusetts. The Chorus performs music in English, Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino, and other languages.  Founded in 2011, it is an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, funded by the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts, the Westborough Cultural Council (a member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council), and private supporters. The chorus is non-auditioned and is open to all people regardless of ethnicity or religious background.

Shir Joy is a musical organization dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation of the breadth and beauty of Jewish culture through performances and related activities. In addition to our two annual concerts at Congregation B’nai Shalom in Westborough, the Chorus performs at other events in Worcester county, including fundraisers for the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Central Massachusetts.
